Surgical Oncology focuses on the surgical treatment of cancers and tumours. Surgery may be used to remove a tumour, assess the extent of cancer, relieve symptoms or form part of a broader treatment plan.
At RushCare Hospitals, each patient is evaluated individually to understand the type, location and extent of cancer before surgery is planned.

Surgical Oncology Care at RushCare

Surgical treatment may be considered for cancers affecting:

• Breast cancer
• Gastrointestinal cancers
• Colorectal cancer
• Liver and biliary cancers
• Pancreatic cancer
• Head and neck cancers
• Thyroid cancers
• Skin and soft tissue cancers
• Other solid tumours

Evaluation and Diagnosis

Before surgery is planned, patients may undergo:

• Medical history and physical examination
• Biopsy and pathology reports
• Blood investigations
• Ultrasound, CT or MRI scans
• PET scans when required
• Endoscopy or other specialised tests
• Cancer type and stage
• Overall fitness for surgery

These findings help determine whether surgery is appropriate and support treatment planning.

Surgical Treatment

Depending on the type and extent of cancer, surgery may involve removing the tumour along with a margin of surrounding tissue. Nearby lymph nodes may also be assessed or removed when clinically indicated.
Surgical approaches may include:

• Open surgery
• Laparoscopic surgery
• Minimally invasive procedures when suitable
• Organ preserving procedures in selected cases
• Reconstructive procedures when required

The choice of procedure depends on the cancer, its location, stage and the patient’s overall health.

Cancer Care Beyond Surgery

Surgery may be one part of a larger cancer treatment plan. Depending on the diagnosis, patients may also require chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy or other treatments.
Coordination between different specialists may be recommended to support comprehensive cancer care.

When Should You See a Surgical Oncologist?

A surgical oncology consultation may be recommended if:

• You have been newly diagnosed with cancer
• A biopsy has confirmed a tumour
• Imaging has identified a suspicious mass
• You have been advised that surgery may be required
• You need evaluation of a tumour that may be surgically treatable
• Cancer has returned and requires further assessment

Care With a Clear Treatment Plan

A cancer diagnosis can bring many questions, particularly when surgery becomes part of treatment. Understanding the diagnosis, the purpose of surgery and the possible treatment pathway can help patients make informed decisions with their medical team.

At RushCare Hospitals, our Surgical Oncology service provides specialised evaluation and surgical care, with treatment planned according to each patient’s cancer diagnosis and individual needs.
